Embalming

Embalming is the process of using chemicals to disinfect and preserve a human body, undertaken by a trained embalmer. Embalming prevents the body from undergoing its natural process of  decay and adds unnecessary chemicals to the soil (if the body id buried).

Remember, embalming or partial embalming involves a cost so think twice before you agree to it.

Modern refrigeration means that in most cases embalming is not required. Embalming or partial embalming is often undertaken however, for example, when:

  • the appearance is to be improved for a viewing (partial emalming is usually used)
  • there is a longer than average delay between death and the funeral
  • the deceased needs to be transferred interstate of overseas
  • burial is to be in an above ground crypt or vault.
