Home Burial

Burial on private land is regulated by local council and health regulations. You will need to check with your local council and your State Health Department.

The natural death centre www.naturaldeathcentre.org.au may be helpful if required but remember, they are a voluntary organisation. Their website indicates "each local council has a policy for burial on private ground, and this must be complied with. The policy usually involves things like:

  • a minimum size of the landholding involved,
  • obtaining written permission from the title holder (the owner),
  • undertaking to register the grave site on the DP (Deposited Plan of the property),
  • selection of a spot that is approved by the Health Dept,
  • that the grave is dug to the approved depth, with a minimum clearance from the lid."
